Survivorship Journey- April Spotlight Volunteer

We would like to spotlight one of our volunteers for the month of April. Pam Cooper became involved with the Ta Ta Rebels a few years ago and is now vice-president.  I have known Pam for quite a few years – her daughters used to babysit my kids.  She was diagnosed a few months before me and we each had very different journeys.  Please take a moment to read her story.

Hi my name is Pam and I’m an 11 year Breast Cancer survivor. My journey started in December 2011 with my diagnosis. They discovered a lump during my yearly mammogram. I cannot express enough the importance of yearly screenings.  In early 2012 I underwent three lumpectomy surgeries. My mom took me to all my appointments, including my mastectomy.  My family Jeff (husband), Amanda and Alicia (daughters) and Josh (son) were also there at the hospital for my surgery. They all were arguing about who would stay with me at the hospital.  Thank goodness for Amanda and Alicia helping me change/manage my dressing at home. They sent a nurse but she acted like she didn’t know what to do. Joshua was home during the day and also helped me.  I wasn’t able to put footrest down on the couch. I just called his name and he came running down to help me with whatever I needed.  Jeff helped also with cooking, laundry, cleaning and running errands. We will be celebrating our 34th anniversary this year.

My hobbies include counted cross stitching, reading, enjoying my grandchildren, and of course volunteering with Ta Ta Rebels. This organization is greatly needed for those after they are no longer in treatment for their continuing medical expenses.
